SANFORD UK & the Environment
Sanford UK Limited is a major manufacturer of writing, marking, colouring and educational products in the United Kingdom. As manufacturers we consume raw materials and packaging, we use services and find ourselves as part of the various chains that deliver products from cradle to grave. As a consequence, all that we do has a potential environmental impact in one way or another and we recognise the part that we can play in the stewardship of these impacts so as to minimise their collective effects upon the environment.
The environment has finite resources and capacity for renewal and we are very much aware that whatever we exploit, consume and waste today has potentially great import for generations yet to come. For these reasons we intend to ensure to the extent possible, we will care for the interests of the planet and its inhabitants. The company intends to invest in people and technology such as will permit the best use of the human and other resources available to it so as to ensure our continued care for the environment in which we work, the environment that we live in and the environment that we call planet earth.
Products
The Sanford UK product range is produced from both natural and synthetic resources. As a company and as an industry sector we have been alerted to the needs of the environment by Codes of Practice, both voluntary and legislative, that have assured appropriate care to our customers and consumers.
As long ago as 1965, we sought compliance with codes relating to the toxic Heavy Metal content of educational products. With the years have come other laws such as the Pencil & Graphics (Safety) Regulations, The Toys (Safety) Regulations, BS 7272 (Safety caps for writing and marking instruments).
Sanford UK Limited has always taken a lead in actively participating in the formulation of these laws and standards and to that end is an active participant in our industry organisation the Writing Instrument Association with affiliations world-wide.
Research & Development
The production of new and revised products begins with a detailed review of what is needed from the Technical Departments.
Sanford UK Limited takes the view that this is the most important area where major contributions can be made to the eco friendliness of the final concept and great care is taken to ensure that all aspects of the end product and the production process are considered.
Raw Materials
The selection of suitable raw materials for use in our products is a very responsible and in many ways a delicate operation, This process begins in the research phase of the product's life but continues well beyond into the life cycle throughout what may be many years of production.
The process is continuous and much care is taken to balance the needs of the consumer with the needs of the production process be it technical or financial. Finally care is taken to ensure, as far as possible, that after the product has given good service that its disposal does not create problems. Sanford UK Limited takes great care to ensure the probity of the suppliers we use to the extent that we actively encourage binding agreements between ourselves and them to create favoured supplier status. This ensures that we mutually secure the best products for our usage and also ensures the continued status of our product range to the benefit of our customers and others in the community.
Environment Policy
Sanford UK Limited wish to conserve and improve where possible the quality of the environment for its customers and employees and also acknowledges, and is committed to, a positive role in Environmental Management.
Specifically Sanford UK Limited will :-
a. Reduce waste and the consumption of resources through the use of properly constructed reviews and audits,
b. Reduce and / or eliminate polluting releases to atmosphere, land and water,
c. Monitor and take into account the environmental effects of current and future product design and performances,
d. Selectively source raw materials from the most environmentally advantageous source. Sanford UK Limited will also actively encourage the substitution of raw materials and services with environmental improvements,
e. Focus product and corporate strategies in environmentally friendly directions.
Regulations
It has been the aim of Sanford UK Limited to not merely comply with existing and known trends in legislation but to anticipate the needs of our customers in these areas. Through our industry organisation, Sanford UK contributes much in the way of time, expertise and resources to the standards making process from which much of our current consumer protection law has stemmed.
Most of our customers will know of the Toys (Safety) Regulations which covers many of the product ranges which Sanford UK supply. This regulation bases its demands upon a series of standards commonly known as EN71. Our customers should take pleasure and satisfaction in the fact that whilst a limited number of our products are marked with the 'ce' mark denoting compliance with the above EN71 standard, that the rigours of the standard are applied to the vast majority of Sanford UK products. Some products for special industrial uses cannot comply by virtue of some of their components but nonetheless wherever possible the spirit of the above standards is carried through. The products are however safe when properly used.
In order to be certain that products comply with the requirements of EN71, Sanford UK has a dedicated laboratory testing raw materials and finished product to the requirements of the standard. This laboratory currently has independent 3rd party accreditation by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
